Assessment of Service Users Needs

An assessment of Need for Care Services will follow any enquiries or services that have been received through Social Services, Local Authority or the Private sector.

Following a receipt of an enquiry or referral the CareDirect Manager or designate will make arrangements to visit the prospective Service User at his/her home. This will provide the opportunity to meet the prospective Service User and Family (where relevant) to introduce and explain the services on offer, and to obtain as much information as possible to enable an individualized Care Plan to be developed. This information will be recorded on appropriate forms.

A basic history and database for the prospective Service User will be recorded as medical and social profiles using the appropriate assessment forms.

The assessment will address the following:

  • Mobility of the Service User, including dependency upon medical aids.
  • Dependency upon prosthetic devices and worn aids, such as hearing aids, spectacles etc.
  • Special dietary needs, to include medical requirements and ethnic / cultural considerations.
  • Existing medical / psychiatric conditions, including allergies, addictions and any current medication.
  • Existing mental state, temperament and social behaviour. Continence.
  • Any special therapeutic requirements.
  • Any other special ethnic, cultural or religious considerations.
  • General state of hygiene / sanitation within the Service Users home environment.

This information will provide the basis to allow an individualised care package to be developed as a Service Users Daily Plan of Care and to match the Service User with one or more suitable Care Workers.

Philosophy of care

Care Workers will strive to preserve and maintain the dignity, individuality and privacy of all Service Users and in so doing will be sensitive to their ever-changing needs. Such needs may be therapeutic/medical (For physical and mental welfare), cultural, psychological, spiritual, emotional and social. Service Users are encouraged to participate in the development of their individual Care plans using a person centred approach. The involvement of family and friends is encouraged and greatly valued.

All care staff will be appropriately qualified to deliver the highest standards of care. A continuous staff-training programme is implemented to ensure that high standards are maintained in line with the latest development in care practices as may be laid down in appropriate Legislation, regulations and the National Care Standards Commission.

Regulations and Police Checks

All organisations providing care or nursing services must comply with the Care Standards Act 2000 and the National Minimum Standards.

Services are regulated and inspected by the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW).

Our latest Inspection Reports for our Domiciliary Care services can be viewed on the internet by visiting the CSSIW website at www.cssiw.wales.gov.uk and following the links to Inspection Reports.

All grades of staff are checked against the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) database and a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure obtained prior to confirmation of employment and placement with any client. They now incorporate a check against the Protection of Vulnerable Adults (POVA) Register. These checks are undertaken by CareDirect (Wales) Ltd. We renew our staff CRB Disclosures every 3 years.

As a member of the United Kingdom Home Care Association (UKHCA), we are required to abide by their Code of Practice for all our home care services.

Training

Regulations require that all domiciliary care providers comply with set minimum standards for the induction and training of all grades of staff, we are constantly striving to upgrade and improve our training programs.

At the moment we provide in house training for our own staff, but we are developing our own training services and will hopefully soon be able to provide training to other individuals and organisations. Some specialist training which may be outside our own training competencies is provided by appropriate external organizations and authorities.

All of our Care Workers will be expected to work towards and obtain an NVQ Level 2 in Care.
